CHAPTER 17

"Where the hell is that fat bastard?" Pagliano was pacing Braken's living room, the white shag carpet showing his path. It was getting close to noon -- several hours since Braken had left -- and he was not a patient man.

"What?" Cheqea broke his thoughts. She stood in the hallway, half dressed, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. "I need some food. You white boys want me to sign that shit, you got to treat me better than this."

"Aren't you pleasant in the morning. No wonder there is no Mr. Chief. Or do you just like girls? I saw you watching that dancer."

"Whatever. That girl needs my help, and so do you. It's a burden I carry, not that you would know anything about that. You're like my brother -- all you can do is break shit." She went to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator door. "I guess you can't cook either." She stuck her head in. "How is that dude so fat when there's nothing in here except styrofoam containers?" She started opening the take-out boxes and smelling them. Finally she settled on something, and set the box on the counter. "Well, what do you have planned for today?"

"I ought to just drug you up and let you sleep until Monday. What a freakin' pain you are." He felt his face flush, and had to control the rage that was sweeping over him. Was everyone south of Dade County a freak or an idiot? If he didn't need her to sign the papers, she'd be feet-up in a dumpster.

She went to the drawer for a fork, and saw the computer screen on the desk. "Got some anger issues, I can see." She went to the computer, chewing on the fork. "Looks like you got some porn issues, too."

He was about to strike her, but turned away, thinking about having to spend a whole weekend with her. Maybe drugging her was the best solution. "Maybe we ought to get you some more of that medicine you keep talking about. Got to say you were way more cooperative."

"You know, that's the first good idea that's come out of your mouth." She pointed the fork at him. "Too bad we lost the girl. I could have helped her. She has demons, you know. But I can help you; Cheqea can tell you have demons too." She went to the counter and started eating.

"The only help I need from you is to sign the freakin' papers." It was taking everything he had to control himself.

"Come on, what do you have to lose? You're stuck with me all weekend, might as well relax a little. It might even be fun." She set the fork down and went to him. He started to recoil, but she was behind him with her hands on his temples, hitting a pressure point before he could react. "Settle down and give it a chance." She started rubbing his forehead with one hand and the back of his neck with the other.
